5 Trends That Need To Be Forgotten

31 March 2014

As unpopular as this article might make me, I feel a compelling duty to do my part in helping to extinguish these trends that have had their day.

One doesn't have to be a fashion aficionado to know that once a garment populates the shops and market stalls of the more run down shopping centre opposite the one you always go to, it is time to be laid to rest. Let me know your thoughts on these trends and if you would want to salvage any of them...

1. Sheer Panel Dresses

Ok, not ALL sheer panel dresses. I'm actually enjoying the revival of 90s style mesh midis that is happening right now on ASOS and the like. I am referring to those worn by the Geordie Shore crowd who buy bargain Boohoo dresses for messy nights out on the town. It's been done a million times, and it does NOT make a monster cleavage acceptable or chic.

2. Slogan T-Shirts of the Non Witty Variety

They were great to begin with, but as this trend has progressed it seems designers are getting lazier and lazier. It is now acceptable to plaster city names across a t-shirt to turn it into 'fashion' (see the entire Primark & River Island men's collections these days). Similarly, the 'Homies' as Hermes &  'Feline' as Celine t-shirts were brilliant to begin with but have now become too widely available - I doubt any of the 14 year olds clad in Punky Fish were acquainted with Celine's minimal, high fashion aesthetic before and I'm sure they still aren't now.

3. Anything emblazoned with the word 'YOLO'

I won't even dignify this with an explanation.

4. Shameless Logo Flaunting

I know, I know. There's a recession on, and so luxury goods have gained an even more privileged position in the eyes of the gullible public. Do not be fooled, many of the merchandise that accompanies designer clothing is subcontracted to other companies or 'licensees' that probably don't uphold the same standards of quality or ethics as the design house itself. Aside from this, there is something extremely off putting about someone who validates their fashion sense by plastering themselves in recognisable designer logos. Just Google 'the psychology of luxury brands' to glimpse at how perverse and manipulative this world is. This trend is only acceptable when worn by Lil Kim and photographed by David Lachapelle (see below).

5. Ugg Boots

And their fake counterparts. Ugg boots are almost a national tragedy these days - come winter half the female (and now male: Google 'man uggs' or 'mugs' as I like to call them) British population is slowed by a waddling shuffle walk that decreases the nation's general efficiency at getting things done. Ugg boots with anything that could be described as 'Bling' on them are especially offensive to the eye. To add insult to injury, these undeniably ugly shoes seem to become dirtied and soiled around the rims much faster than any conventional boot.
