How to accessorise like Italian girls

9 February 2018

Accessories are the best – they allow you to completely change your outfit without actually having to change your clothes. The beauty is in the details, or so it seems, and when it comes to accessorising, Italian women have it all figured out. Fashion is very important in Italy and ladies are very concerned with how they look and what they wear. Famous for their impeccable sense of fashion, Italian women have a very specific style they take pride in. We give you a few tips on how to accessorise like a real Italian woman.

Sun protection hats

@Ionut Comanici

Anyone who has ever been to Italy can tell you that the sun is different there – it appears to be much stronger, making you very sensitive to its rays. Sunglasses are important, and you will rarely see an Italian man or woman leave their home without a nice pair of sunglasses, especially during summer months. Straw hats are also welcome, especially very stylish ones you can decorate with a nice silk or velvet ribbon. Sunglasses and hats will protect you from the harsh sunrays, but at the same time they will make you look (and feel) like a movie star trying to hide from the paparazzi.

 Mix and Match

@Vanessa Serpas

For Italians, men and women alike, being stylish is imperative, and one of the ways to achieve that is by knowing how to layer up. Due to the closeness of the sea and that lovely breeze, the air is often crisp in the evenings, which is why it’s a good idea to always have something warm to wrap around your shoulders. When the weather allows it, a lovely silk or cashmere shawl is enough, but it’s often better to layer with a coat (and it’s best if it’s an elegant one, too). Chic jackets and lovely trench coats are always welcome, and when paired with warm shawls or simple scarves, they will make you look and feel like a princess.

Jewellery

@Vin Stratton

Jewellery is very important to Italian women, but that doesn’t mean that they like wearing luxurious pieces all the time. They treasure their jewellery and are very careful how much they wear at once: chunky bracelets and statement necklaces have been popular, but they have never been mixed together. Also, it seems like glass jewellery is especially popular for several reasons: Roman glass jewellery has deeps roots and offers a great way to combine traditional with edgy and modern, while Venetian Murano glass jewellery is well-known all over the world for its innovative design.

Handbags

@Henri Pham

All women of the world share a similar trait: they are rarely seen without a handbag on their arm, in their hand or on their shoulders. Bags are a simple and easy way to add more class or playfulness to your outfit in a blink of an eye. Italian designer handbags are famous worldwide for their wonderful design, elegance and simplicity, and it’s no wonder Italian leather craftsmanship is the gold standard. A classic leather bag can be seen on pretty much any lady in the street, so if you’re looking for a way to be elegant and sophisticated, investing in a high quality leather bag is a good start.

An important thing to keep in mind is that Italian women love to dress up, but also to dress down. It isn’t always about wearing an expensive piece that will make everyone guess that it was really expensive, but more about putting together an outfit that will make everyone notice you. It’s not all about what you wear, but rather how you wear it, and that is something you have to work on. After all, a confident smile is the best makeup a girl can wear.
