There are countless ways to make an outfit stand out, but the most important element of a stylish look is feeling good in it. Your outfit should feel like you—you’re wearing the outfit, not the other way around. For example, you might tell me you love Carrie’s style, but would you feel comfortable in Manolos and a crop top with a belt wrapped around your bare waist? (Honestly, I hated that outfit!) Probably not—especially if you’ve come to me, a personal stylist, for guidance. Style is about finding what works for you, not forcing yourself into looks that don’t align with your personality.
The first thing you need is confidence in your ability to pull off an outfit—and that starts with investing time in understanding your personal style.
The idea of "effortless style" is a complete myth. Effortless style takes a lot of effort, just like the "no-makeup makeup look" requires great skin and quality products.
You need to take the time to understand your needs, preferences, and the styles you’re naturally drawn to. From there, focus on finding pieces that help you bring that vision to life. Remember, it’s a process, and it’s not set in stone—just as our personalities evolve over the years, so does our style, and that’s perfectly okay!
Whether you use the 3-word method or create mood boards to define your style, there are simple daily habits you can adopt to be more purposeful with your fashion choices:
1. Dress for the job you have
Your daily wardrobe should reflect what you do while staying true to your style. Office wear can still be fun and stylish, and if you work from home, you can be comfortable and still look great! Don’t overthink it—choose pieces that fit your daily routine. I’ve learned this the hard way; now, I skip the ecru jeans when taking the dog out in the morning!
2. Find the outfit formula that works for you
It’s honestly the solution to most style dilemmas! Let’s say you love wearing jeans, wide-leg trousers (like me!), dresses or skirts —create a go-to outfit combination centred around that piece and repeat it confidently and constantly.
For instance, I love pairing my wide-leg trousers with a tank top or t-shirt, topped with a slightly oversized layer like a blazer, coat, or shirt. You’ll often find me in some variation of this look—sometimes in bold colours, other times more neutral, dressed up or down. It’s a combination that makes me feel confident, flatters my shape (I have big hips and a small waist), and is incredibly practical for my daily routine—whether I’m taking Bowie out, working from home or on set, or even heading out with friends in the evening.
3. Invest time in caring for your clothes
Wash, iron, steam, dry clean, mend, and tailor as needed. Think of your future self, always rushing and short on time, and prep your clothes before they go back into your wardrobe. Don’t hang them up if they need care, because you’re more likely to skip wearing them altogether when you're in a rush. I always have my hand steamer handy (ha!) for quick touch-ups but nothing can beat a good ironing session.
4. Add your personal touch with:
- Jewellery: when your outfit feels like it’s missing something, try adding your favourite jewellery pieces. Think about what you already own and why you love them—perhaps they’re special because they’re a souvenir from a trip or a cherished family heirloom. You don’t need a huge collection; invest in a few quality pieces you truly love and wear them with all your outfits. For me, my Monica Vinader earrings, a few layered necklaces, and a couple of rings always make my outfit feel complete.
- Bags: You don’t need a different bag for every outfit, but the right bag can elevate your look effortlessly. I keep a few bags in rotation, and I recently found a second-hand Chloé Kiss bag in brown that I love because it goes with everything. I also adore my black leather bag from & Other Stories—it looks so polished and expensive without breaking the bank. If you’re going to invest in a bag, take your time to choose wisely. Avoid chasing “it bags” and instead go for a timeless piece you truly love and can’t stop thinking about. Don’t let influencers or celebrities dictate your choice—this is an important decision that should reflect your personal style. There are also fantastic brands that offer high-quality bags without the hefty price tag, like Polène or Demellier. And don’t forget about second-hand treasures! I trust Vestiaire Collective for authenticity, but eBay can also be a great option—just make sure to triple-check the seller’s feedback and request proof of authenticity.
- Footwear: whenever I start feeling a bit bored with my outfits, I treat myself to a new pair of shoes! Recently, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect pair of cowboy boots, and yesterday, I finally found them. They instantly transform the vibe of an outfit—especially when you opt for the unexpected ‘wrong shoe.’
- Other accessories: have to give it to Gok Wan, belts can work wonders by completely transforming an outfit, cinching and enhancing all the right spots for a polished look. Scarves are another great accessory for layering and adding texture, especially when an outfit feels a bit flat. They’re also perfect for introducing a pop of colour or print to a neutral ensemble. And don’t forget about brooches and floral corsages, which are having a moment right now—they’re an easy way to add a unique touch of personality to your outfit. And what about bag charms? It’s all the rage now! I haven’t tried them yet, but seems like a great way of adding colour, fun and purpose to your look!
Remember, fashion is an expression of your unique self. By incorporating these habits into your daily routine, you’ll not only elevate your wardrobe but also your confidence. So go ahead—dress with purpose, take pride in your style, and make every outfit your own.
