A new season is here—cue the excitement and a little freakout! All these fresh trends, racks of gorgeous new finds in every shop, and yeah... I'm so over my current wardrobe. So, I guess it's time to buy an entire autumn wardrobe, right?
Actually… no! Look, I get it, the urge is real. Even though I've managed to train my inner shopaholic, autumn always whispers, "Hey, maybe it’s time to refresh everything!"
But I know you care about what you add into your wardrobe (otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this!), so put your credit card away and read these tips before you go shopping for new trends.
Do you really like it?
It doesn’t matter that everything is screaming boho-chic right now, or there are leopard print minions everywhere you look. What really matters is your first reaction to these trends.
Be honest, be ruthless, and if you’re not feeling it, just move on. Think of it like a pair of Crocs: if your gut reaction is “Oh no, absolutely not,” don’t hang around waiting for it to grow on you just because everyone else is into it!
For me, fashion fascination kicked off in the early 2000s, right in the heart of the Sienna Miller and Kate Moss boho-chic era. So now, with Chloe reviving that dreamy bohemian vibe, I’m all eyes, ears, and ready to dive in!
Do you already have it in your wardrobe?
Most trends (if not all!) are totally cyclical, so odds are you already have something similar hanging in your wardrobe.
Maybe you don’t have the exact pair of leopard print jeans everyone’s rocking (which could be a blessing!), but perhaps there’s a leopard print dress or shirt in there somewhere. Think about ways to make it feel fresh and a bit more modern! Need inspo? Check online, or DM me on Instagram—I’d love to help you out!
Ok, you do like it, but are you going to wear it?
If you’re into a trend, think of one piece that would truly add something special to your wardrobe.
For example, say you’re loving the red accents trend but don’t usually wear much colour. Start small with a pair of red socks you can slip into your go-to outfits. From there, you can work up to something bigger—maybe a cosy cashmere sweater or a cute dress. Just make sure you’ll love it the long run.
Take leopard print, for example—I’ve always loved it, but I just can’t see myself in a pair of leopard print jeans. Even if I like them now, I know I’d get bored of them fast. Instead, I’d rather stick with my satin leopard print skirt or maybe go for a bag or belt—something timeless I can enjoy now and for years to come.
Can you shop for it second hand?
Some trends just shine better secondhand—it’s a fact! Don’t believe me? I’d happily share my Vestiaire wish list. Trends are so cyclical that you can score vintage designer gems no one else will have, and even hold more value!
And hey, you don’t need to go full designer! Vinted and eBay are goldmines for finding trendy pieces from people who bought them, wore them a few times, and moved on.
Are you going to wear it after the trend has died down on social media?
I know, I know—the Instagram aesthetic pull is so real! But trust me, once you start going down that rabbit hole, there’s no turning back.
Go for a trend because you genuinely love it, because you can see yourself rocking it months or even years down the line, no matter if everyone else has moved on.
A big part of personal style is being confident and happy wearing what you enjoy, regardless of what anyone else thinks.
